Nevada Local Politics

May 15, 2025

I began the below post well before the election of 2024 with the intention of posting on the 1st of November. However, I became a parent in rapid fashion via adoption in October and the post never was published. I want to share my thoughts at the time anyway since I think that the information is still relevant for participating in your local government and community

Prelude: Written for November 1, 2024

Las Vegas Valley Politics

The 2024 Presidential elections are around the corner. I have zero desire or intention to tell you how to VOTE but I strongly encourage you to participate, especially in your local elections and government. You may consider voting to be a privilege, or like me, a duty as a citizen. Here we will take a look at the Las Vegas Valley political scene and where you can find information on how to participate. There are some aspects of Las Vegas that are unique to this vibrant Southwest city and its surrounding areas that you may not know if you aren’t a political junkie nor from the area.

As much as possible, I have linked to relevant government web pages, news articles and any other relevant documentation I can collect to make this page as informative as possible. Items are grouped by State jurisdiction, then county, then city and finally where the unincorporated regions fall.

Information About Local Law Enforcement

Last year I shared some of my thoughts on the local law enforcement so I won’t discuss that here so much but you check out that post here.

Police Departments

Above I mentioned the LVMPD as part of the other departments within the Clark County government. They oversee the city of Las Vegas as well as all the unincorporated region of the county and collaborate with the Mayor of Las Vegas however, the mayor doesn’t oversee the unincorporated region of the valley.

This is one of the most unique aspects of the politics within the region. The sheriff is for the county and that elected official oversees the LVMPD, as well as the other regional police and law enforcement agencies throughout the county. They must collaborate with many officials of the county and various incorporated cities. In most states, the sheriff of a county isn’t necessarily an elected position many pay close attention to in their consideration for officials. But in Vegas, it is a massively impactful role. The current sheriff is Kevin McMahill and he’s made his platform about bringing humanity to policing and including mental health as a priority for his officers.

I don’t know what his career aspirations are following his current post, but there are no term limits on the position and he seems to be well regarded by his officers and respected by the community overall. He presents as level-headed and has to manage one of the wildest cities on the planet due to the very large volume of visitors and also the diverse political, cultural, socio-economical and racial community of residents. Here are the other offices of the state and various counties - among them the other Clark County city Chiefs of Police for Henderson and North Las Vegas.

Lastly, you may check out the other Clark County police departments:

Judges and the Courts

Ah, the courts…

Honestly, I think this is the most consequential political body but gets the least attention.

All I can really say here is that I do my best to mind these positions when they arise but MANY candidates run unopposed and reading legalese is very difficult to keep up with, so I give grace to all who just don’t pay attention, myself included. With that said, here are the various judicial branches for the county

I encourage you to review the courts system, that I hope you never have to encounter, but you may very well experience something leading to interactions with this department and impacting you or someone you know.

Non-Profits

While not intertwined directly with politics, nonprofits are adjacent and can influence the political system. If you have political views and priorities of interest, you may find an organization that supports that cause and have a desire to get involved. This is not an exhaustive list but can get you started, along with making use of social media and engaging in community events. Here are some resources on Nevada Nonprofits

General Voting Resources

Lastly, I want to leave you with some resources about how to register to vote, when elections occur in you local area of the valley and general information to help you be an informed and active voter. Like I said before, I am not here to tell you how to vote (even if you may be able to tell my personal political leanings in my blog!) but to encourage you to participate according to the values that matter to you.

The Nevada Secretary of State website is a great place to begin but there are some other national organizations that provide state-specific information.
