Compass profits off of convincing sellers of marketing with exclusive listings (“pocket listings”). Not actually benefiting the seller in anyway.
I am all for market disruption and giving sellers more choice in how they compete among consumers but NEVER at the expense of the consumer. The only time I am going to be weary of providing benefit and upper hand to the consumer is when that consumer is also a large corporation cosplaying as a person.
There is also the glaring market of selling exclusivity TO real estate agents. Since I’ve obtained my real estate license, I noticed how much of a market cap exists to take money from agents via commission splits, referral fees and selling leads. I’m not hating because well… capitalism. I can acknowledge the economy and society in which I exist.
But WOW, the amount of a whole new category of spam calls to my phone of people trying to sell me leads, get me on their team or move to their brokerage - all for the naked motivation to get their cut.
