Back in 2012 as my first job in Seattle, I used to sell cruises for an online travel agency, one of those big ones that had national commercials and a mascot.
I only ever stayed overnight on one for a out-and-back trip on the Celebrity Millennium. I had a blast on that trip but didn’t feel the need to have ship life be my every vacation. Over the years a friend invited me to join one of their trips several times. The year I finally said yes, and we were going to be leaving from the same city, the 2020 Pandemic hit about a month before our departure date. I was pretty disappointed and really felt like the Universe was letting me know that ship life was not meant for me!
Many years later the industry is doing fine, I think as they keep building bigger and bigger ships, and there is now a new way to live the cruising life. Have you ever heard of the cruises that last multiple months and even years to travel the world? I was also so fascinated by those who opted for this investment.
Now this extended travel style becomes a more permanent investment as residential options on the water. Today I stumbled upon an article where a cruise line is selling residences for a five-year long commitment! I shouldn’t be too surprised, after all there is an entire niche industry of those who choose to live on the open road in various traveling homes. The article shares a quote from the Crescent Seas chairman and he makes a great point,
“71% of the Earth is covered by water, so it’s natural that residents will start to exist at sea,” Galbut said. “It seems to me that the world is getting to be a smaller place, and we have to build these communities at sea because it gives people the opportunity to be in every gateway city of the world.”
Russell Galbut, the founder and chairman of Crescent Seas (and the cofounder of Crescent Heights), told Business Insider that his company has paid a deposit to charter the Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings-owned vessel.
