In a recent article in the Review Journal there was mention of a slow down in the Las Vegas profit margins. While there is little fear of recession, it is clear there is a strain on the biggest money maker of the Valley after this summer. While the wealthy are still happily spending their money and the casinos are happy to cater to them, there is a huge complaint from the middle- and lower- income brackets (especially locals who work in these establishments) that there is less and less for them to enjoy on the Strip.
Yes, I agree. But I’d narrow that down even further. The Strip is feeling the slower visitation this summer but that is because there is competition from the rest of the Valley.
The City of Las Vegas is changing marketing and is evolving with plenty to explore in the older Downtown area with many of the casinos, bars and entertainment being substantially less expensive and way easier to access. There are also several Station Casinos gaining favor with the locals and added sports entertainment gaining stronger popularity every season.
The Strip previously carried the message and reputation for the whole metro but now there are some new adventures in town that are off the Strip.
With so much available throughout the valley worth visiting, the Strip may well become the land of the wealthy while the locals laugh all the way to the other neighborhoods and recommending visitors who don’t live like the 1% spend their dollars anywhere else.
For now, the casinos on the Strip are still making profits that can sustain them just fine. But there is always the risk of alienating your locals to the point of hostility that may lead to an unsustainable conclusion and I don’t agree with their approach.
